How is Bill Gates richer than Steve Jobs though Apple is a more valuable company compared to Microsoft?

This is because Steve Jobs was never really interested in accumulating wealth:

  1. Steve Jobs would get only $1 per year as salary while he was working at Apple. He even joked about it, saying, “I get 50 cents for showing up at board meetings and the other 50 is based on my performance.”
  2. Steve, when ousted from Apple in 1985, sold all but one share of Apple (he apparently held 11% of the total shares of the company) for personal reasons. Had he held on to them, his net worth would have been $54 billion when he died.
  3. Moreover, he received additional shares from Apple when he re-joined the company as advisor a decade later. Had he held on to these (and the 11% discussed in the earlier point), his net worth would have been a mind-boggling $127 billion that was more than twice as compared to Bill Gates’ $59 billion at that time.
  4. Unfortunately, Steve ‘s net worth was only $7 billion when he died. (this is even less than people like Mukesh Ambani, Azim Premji, Ruia brothers, Gautam Adani etc.)
  5. But then, He was always interested in building Apple rather than his own fortune. That’s how some people are.
